This is just a snippet of one of the lectionary readings for today…
6As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. – Colossians 2:6-7
These two verses in particular stuck out. Life can be chaotic. We can lose sense of who we are, who we think we are, and who we want to be. Circumstances can overwhelm us and cause us to lose track. Recently I was going through old journals and one entry from 2013 was a string of ramblings and questions on who I am. How I should live. In the past year I have definitely become a more confident person, yet there are still times that I revert into being unsure of myself.
This scripture stood out because particular with the words rooted and built up in him. The words are intentional. When I think of the word rooted, I automatically think of trees. The more they grow the deeper their roots grow. They are solid. There are trees on our earth that have been there for hundreds of years. A tree doesn’t uprooting itself (unless we are talking about Ents, but that is a different topic. Besides I am not sure if we would classify Ents wholly in the realm of trees. They are tree shepherds and so related, but now I am digressing). I think that by reverting into this pattern of being unsure of ourselves we are in a sense ripping up roots.
The second part, built up in him, is also important. The passage does not talk about building ourselves up, for that would be pride. Instead we are built up in and through someone much greater. When we look at it like this it seems like a crime to tear down what Jesus has built up. Besides we are our own worst critics. Why not work on seeing ourselves as God sees us?
I think this is a great passage to start off the year. A good reminder to be strong and confident. Are you ready to take on 2015?
